Teaching aims  

Know the new words in the story.  

Try to read and understand the whole story and act.  

Learn to read and understand the story by guessing and predicting; learn to cooperate with others.  

Try to tell the students, when you are in trouble, don’t be sad, everything will be OK.

Teaching procedures  

1.    Enjoy a song “Big and small”.  

2.    Pre-reading  

T: The song is about big and small. What is big? What is small? Can you say something about big and small?  

S:…is big. …is small.  

T: Look at this man, is he big or small?  

S:Big.  

T: Yes, so we call him a giant. What is a giant?  

A. He was big.  

B. He was very big.  

C. He was very very very big.  

S: C.

T: Yes, he was very very very big. Do you want to know this giant? Do you want to read a story about the giant?  

S: Yes.  

T: Today I will tell you a story about the giant.  

3.    While-reading  

1.     Read and answer  

When we read stories, we can make a reading card. Look, this is a reading card, we can write down the title of the book, the characters, the place, the plot, and we should write our favourite sentences. First , let’s focus here: the characters and the place.   

First, let’s enjoy the story.  

Check the answers.  

Characters  

      T: Who are the characters?  

      S: Mr Big. Children.  

      T: Why did we call him Mr Big?  

      S: Because he was very very very big.  

      T: Yes, look at his shoes. They are very big. Anything else? Can you say something about Mr Big?   

      S: His … is/are big.  

      T: What about his house and the things in his house?  

      S: ….  

      T: So we can say : He lived in a big house with big windows and a big door. Who can read the long sentence well?  

        We know Mr Big a lot. Now can you introduce Mr Big?  

        Discuss in pairs.  

      Place  

      T: Where did he go?  

      S: The park.  

      T: One day Mr Big went to the park. What can you see in the park?  

      S: I can see…  

      T: What happened in the park, this is the plot.  

2.     Read and find  

What did Mr Big want to go on ?Finally, what did he go on?   

Please read P2-P7 silently and try to find the answers.   

Check the answers.  

T: What did he want to go on?  

S: swing, slide, roundabout.  

     T: What did he want to go on at first?  

     S: Swing.  

     T: Do you like swings?  

     S: Yes.  

     T: So did Mr Big.

T: He wanted to go on the swing. So he asked   

PPT: Can I go on that swing? 指导朗读。  

TCan Mr Big go on the swing?  

S: No.  

T: Why?  

S: He was very very very big.  

T: Great. The children looked at Mr Big. He was very very very big.

PPT: You are too big.

 Please guess with your parters.  

 Your story is very good. What about the story in the book? Let’s have a look.  

4.     T:Mr Big can’t go on the swing, Mr Big can’t go on the slide, Mr Big can’t go on the roundabout. Look at the picture. How was Mr Big?   

S: He was sad.  

T: So he said: What can I go on?  

The children looked at Mr Big. Then they looked at the bouncy castle.  

How was the bouncy castle?  

S: It was very big.  

T: What will the children say? Guess?  

PPT: You can go on the bouncy castle.  

T: So can he go on the bouncy castle?  

S: Yes.  

T: So he was very happy. What will he say? Guess.  

PPT: Yippee.  

5.     T: What’s your favourite sentence? Let’s enjoy the story again and tell me.  

They are my favourite sentences.  

6.     We know the story well. But we don’t know the title. Can you give a title to the story?  

S:…  

T: Look at the cover. The title is “Mr Big goes to the park.”  

4.    Post-reading  

   What do you learn from the story?  

   Talk with your partners.  

   Do you like the story? Do you want to know more stories about the story?
